Winter Weather Safety
Winter weather in Petersburg can change quickly. Snow, ice, and rain events may create hazardous travel conditions, icy roadways, and localized flooding. Public Works prepares year-round for winter storms, and community cooperation plays an important role in keeping everyone safe.
How You Can Prepare
- Keep shovels, salt, or sand on hand before storms arrive.
- Make a snow-removal plan for your home or business.
- Park vehicles off roadways whenever possible to allow for snow removal operations.
Snow Removal Responsibilities
- Do not push or pile snow into streets where it can create traffic hazards.
- Avoid pushing or piling snow over storm drains and culvert openings, which can lead to flooding.
- Sidewalks are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner.
- Keep fire hydrants clear and visible for emergency access.
During Winter Storms
- Avoid travel when possible, especially during heavy snow, rain, or icy conditions.
- Be alert for icy surfaces if temperatures rise and snow turns to rain.
- Heavy rain may overwhelm storm drains and cause localized flooding.
Look Out for Each Other
- Check on neighbors, especially elders or anyone who may need assistance.
- If you are able, consider helping with snow removal in your neighborhood.
