Petersburg, Alaska is community with a unique story to tell about its commercial fishing culture, Nordic heritage, breathtaking panoramic views, and hearty residents.

Located in the middle of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Petersburg is an ideal base for exploring the beauty and wilderness of Southeast Alaska. Petersburg offers all the amenities of a large community, but without the crowds and congestion often found at the “big cruise ship port of calls” in the region.

As an island community and a commercial fishing port, Petersburg’s culture and history are linked to the sea and found in the details of everyday life. We drive down streets named after fishing boats, like Middleton and Gjoa, and dress our children in oilskins (i.e. heavy duty rain gear) as soon as they can walk.

The tides, comings and goings of fishing boats, the salty air, the return of the hooligan and herring heralding spring, and the Harbormaster’s call to “check your boat” announcing the rainy days of fall have arrived, all serve as our clock and calendar.

Petersburg is a hard-working commercial fishing port. We are homeport to over 500 commercial vessels in three municipal-owned harbors. Millions of pounds of seafood cross the dock each year, making Petersburg one of the top seafood ports in the nation.
