School District

The Petersburg School District is recognized as one of the top school districts in Alaska.

In 2007, the Rae C. Stedman Elementary School was recognized as a “Blue-Ribbon School”. Stedman Elementary was one of two schools in Alaska, and one of 200 public schools nationwide to receive the honor. In 2020, the Mitkof Middle School was recognized as a "Blue-Ribbon School' and the Petersburg High School was recognized as the top high school in Alaska by US News and World Report.

In 2020, Petersburg High School reported a graduation rate of 100%. Students can take a variety of advance placement classes, and there is a well-developed career and technical education program where students can qualify for college credit. Student life is active with a variety of sport, recreation, and extracurricular clubs. 

The school district was recognized by Apple Computer for integrating technology into the school curriculum. The district was one of the first in the state to be certified a HealthierUS School for creating a healthier school environment through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

The Petersburg Public Library holds workshops for all age levels, which are often taught by local residents. GED tutoring is available and there is a testing center for exams.
