For outdoor lovers, the surrounding Tongass National Forest provides unlimited recreational opportunities including fishing, hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, camping, kayaking/canoeing, backcountry cross-country skiing, bike trails, and ice skating.

Petersburg's Parks and Recreation Department sponsors various activities throughout the year including youth basketball and volleyball, tot park, run/walk races, indoor hockey and roller skating, and seasonal events.

The Aquatic Center includes a 25-yard lap pool, warm water leisure pool, water slide, and sauna. The Parks & Rec department offers water aerobics, lifeguard certification, youth classes, and a US Masters Swim team. The Petersburg School District and Viking Swim Club offer classes and organized training and competitions.

The fitness area has a weight room, cardio area, and a squash/racquetball court, and a multi-use court for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball.
